The Power of Staying Present: Why Listening Matters More Than We Think

For this start of the week, I’d like to reflect a bit. You see, in our busy world, it’s easy to get caught up in the next task, the next call, or the next email. However, I’ve learned, both in my career as a paralegal and in my work as a mobile notary, that the most valuable skill I can bring to any interaction isn’t just knowledge or efficiency: it’s presence.

Certainly, when I choose to stay present, something shifts. Instead of thinking about what I’m going to say next, I listen fully. I hear not just words, but tone, pauses, and the emotions underneath.

This practice of mindfulness has changed how I connect with people. It’s allowed me to build trust quickly, handle delicate situations with care, and truly meet people where they are. Additionally, on a personal level, it’s also made me happier since I walk away from conversations feeling more grounded and grateful.

Truth be told, mindfulness doesn’t require a quiet room or hours of meditation. It can be as simple as putting your phone down when someone’s speaking, taking a breath before responding, or reminding yourself: this moment is all that matters right now.

Therefore, if there’s one piece of advice I can share, it’s this: try listening with your whole attention today. You might be surprised at how much more connected you feel to others and to yourself! Happy week to everyone!
